Professional Opportunities at Animal Medical Hospital

We believe in a balanced lifestyle. We work hard, but also feel that time away from the practice is important to renew and refresh ourselves.

We offer numerous professional development opportunities for veterinary students and qualified candidates through our Externship, Internship and ABVP programs.

Externships

Animal Medical Hospital is pleased to offer externship or preceptorship opportunities to eligible students in their junior or senior year of veterinary school. This allows students to observe life at Animal Medical Hospital and receive some hands-on experience.

The Externship Program gives veterinary students an opportunity to experience many facets of veterinary medicine, including:

  • Internal medicine
  • Surgery
  • Dentistry
  • Emergency medicine
  • General wellness
  • Observation of rounds, veterinary meetings, continuing education, training materials

In the past, we have welcomed numerous externs from all over the United States. We are able to accommodate externships ranging anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. We are not able to provide housing for externs, so that is something to keep in mind if you are considering an externship with AMH.

Our Externship Program has proven to be popular over the years, so we encourage anyone who is interested to contact us at externship@animalmedical.net.

Internships

Animal Medical Hospital offers qualified veterinary candidates a practical and comprehensive internship program in a small animal, general practice setting. The key areas we emphasize include internal medicine, surgery, and emergency-critical care. Additionally, individuals may opt for veterinary business management orientations.

Our entire professional staff works as a team to mentor each intern. Dr. Lori Pennea is responsible for direct oversight of the intern’s progress during the introductory period and continues to be available for consultation and instruction. Interns will spend time learning specific areas with the appropriate professional staff member.

Animal Medical Hospital functions as a 24-hour hospital. Emergency duty (including emergency-critical care, surgery, out-patient visits, and treatment-ICU) is rotated between the interns and staff veterinarians. Participation in daily rounds, weekly case presentation, and regular review of journal articles are all required. Training is accomplished through one-on-one lecture and hands-on participation.

Although we believe it is critically important to give continuing instruction during the internship, we expect interns to gain confidence as they progress and function intelligently and proficiently on their own. Thorough case evaluations and work-ups, consistency in client communication, and a dedication to perform at a level of excellence is required.

We believe in a balanced lifestyle. We work hard, but also feel that time away from the practice is important to renew and refresh ourselves. Charlotte is a beautiful city, offering a diversity of entertainment from cultural events, sports, and great restaurants. Both the beach and the mountains are easily accessible and the cost of living is reasonable.

‘Thank you’ truly doesn’t come close to saying enough! We know that it is only because of your amazing doctors and techs (and maybe some divine intervention) that our puppy has made a full recovery!
