September is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaha.org\/blog\/post\/695744\/September-is-Animal-Pain-Awareness-Month.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal Pain Awareness Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so now is the perfect opportunity to delve deeper into the issue of pet pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of Pet Pain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, our pets can\u2019t tell us when they\u2019re hurting. Combine this with the fact that dogs and cats are hardwired to hide signs of illness or injury, it can sometimes be extremely difficult to tell when a pet is in pain. Your pet\u2019s regular wellness exams are a good opportunity for us to assess your pet for signs of trouble, but your observations at home are just as important.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common signs of pet pain include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panting (more than usual)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased vocalization (crying, yelping, whining, or yowling)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obsessive licking or grooming of a specific area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal from family and friends<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snapping or growling when touched<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeming unsettled or uncomfortable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limping or favoring one side<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know your pet better than anyone else, and paying close attention to their daily habits, routines, and quirks can help you detect minor changes that may indicate your pet is struggling. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Focus on Pain Management<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain is not only uncomfortable for a pet, it can actually impair the healing process by lowering immunity and decreasing appetite.
