This highly contagious virus can cause massive amounts of suffering in afflicted pets and is often fatal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because parvo is found throughout our environment, all dogs (especially unvaccinated dogs and puppies under 4 months of age) are at risk for contracting the disease. Pet owner education is critical when it comes to preventing this devastating illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Know the Signs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Parvovirus attacks the gastrointestinal tract, white blood cells, bone marrow, and heart tissue. Because so many bodily systems are affected, the immune cells usually struggle to keep up with the spread of the disease, allowing even more toxic substances to enter the bloodstream.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please contact us immediately if you notice any of the following signs of parvo in your pet:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lethargy<\/li><li>Loss of appetite<\/li><li>Bloating <\/li><li>Vomiting<\/li><li>Severe, foul smelling, bloody diarrhea<\/li><li>Fever <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating Canine Parvovirus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no drug to cure canine parvovirus, so treatment is supportive in nature. A dog\u2019s chances of survival increase with early, aggressive therapy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/veterinary-services\/senior-wellness.html\">Older animals<\/a> and those who have been partially vaccinated tend to have better outcomes than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/veterinary-services\/puppies-kittens.html\">puppies<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/\">Animal Medical Hospital &amp; Urgent Care<\/a> is the only local veterinary hospital to offer a parvo treatment plan at a set rate. If you\u2019re not sure whether your dog\u2019s parvo vaccination is current, please contact your veterinarian.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional ways to help stop the spread of parvo include:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/2022\/01\/adopting-a-new-puppy-tips-and-tricks-for-the-first-days\/\">puppies under 5 months old<\/a> away from areas where other dogs congregate (dog parks, boarding kennels, doggie daycare, etc.).<\/li><li>Never allow your dog to investigate the fecal matter of other dogs; clean up and properly dispose of your dog\u2019s waste to limit the spread of the disease.<\/li><li>Wash your hands and change clothes immediately after handling a sick dog or one who has been exposed to parvo.<\/li><li>Quarantine dogs and those that have been exposed inside your home. Don\u2019t allow them to come into contact with other animals or people.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Parvo is scary, and fighting the disease is a tough battle.
