Here\u2019s what to put in your pet first aid kit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center number: (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply)<\/li><li>Our emergency number: (704) 334-4684&nbsp;<\/li><li>Your pet\u2019s medical records, including vaccine information and species breed, sex, weight, and age<\/li><li>Muzzle<\/li><li>Gauze<\/li><li>Elastic bands<\/li><li>Nonstick bandages<\/li><li>Adhesive veterinary tape for the bandages<\/li><li>Rectal thermometer for pets<\/li><li>Leash<\/li><li>Milk of magnesia\u2014<em>only <\/em>use under direction from one of our veterinarians or an ASPCA Poison Control expert<\/li><li>Activated charcoal\u2014<em>only <\/em>use under direction from one of our veterinarians or an ASPCA Poison Control expert<\/li><li>A pet stretcher or a blanket to use as a stretcher if needed<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve stocked your pet first aid kit, you\u2019ll be prepared to help your dog or cat in the event of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/2020\/09\/in-case-of-a-pet-emergency\/\">emergency<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Pet Emergencies&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding what a pet emergency looks like is key to knowing when to start first aid. The list below isn\u2019t exhaustive, though. Call our emergency number if you\u2019re unsure whether your pet is in distress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs your pet needs first aid and emergency care include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Difficulty breathing or choking<\/li><li>Excessive bleeding<\/li><li>Seizures<\/li><li>Signs of pain, including whining, howling, barking, or meowing<\/li><li>Inability to defecate or urinate<\/li><li>Eye injury, inflammation, or blindness<\/li><li>Unconsciousness<\/li><li>Bloated or swollen abdomen<\/li><li>Vomiting several times in one day or for multiple days in a row<\/li><li>Bloody diarrhea<\/li><li>Open wounds, broken bones, and other severe injuries<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as you recognize that your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/2018\/03\/pet-emergency\/\">pet is in crisis <\/a>your goal is to stabilize your pet so you can transport them to your emergency veterinary hospital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basic Pet First Aid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Four of the most serious situations that require first aid are choking, seizures, fractures, and bleeding. Let\u2019s take a look at the first aid you can provide your pet in these four scenarios.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choking<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Carefully check inside your pet\u2019s mouth for a foreign object and remove it if you can. Do not push the object further back into your pet\u2019s throat. If your pet is too frantic to let you look inside their mouth or the object is something you can\u2019t remove, drive your pet to our emergency room immediately.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seizures<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Clear the area around your pet. Do not restrain your cat or dog. Call our emergency number and keep your pet warm once the seizure ends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fractures<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Place a muzzle over your pet\u2019s mouth. Dogs can get agitated and bite out of fear when they are in pain. Secure your pet in your emergency stretcher or blanket, keeping them as still and flat as you can. Drive your injured furry friend to our emergency room.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bleeding<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Put a muzzle on your pet. Apply pressure to the wound using gauze from your pet first aid kit. Once the blood starts to clot, place a bandage around the wound and secure it with adhesive tape before driving your dog or cat to our emergency center.
