{"id":661,"date":"2016-09-06T12:01:05","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T12:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/?p=661"},"modified":"2016-09-06T12:01:05","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T12:01:05","slug":"feline-urinary-tract-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/feline-urinary-tract-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Feline Urinary Tract Disease: What Cat Owners Should Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Dr. Lauren Hathaway<\/h1>\n<p>Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is commonly diagnosed in cats and can have a variety of underlying causes.\u00a0 As the name implies, this group of disorders involves the structures of the lower urinary tract, including the bladder and urethra (the long tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body).\u00a0 Signs of urinary tract disease in cats can range from mild to severe, with even death a possibility if left untreated.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why is my cat urinating outside of the litterbox?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the first signs of urinary tract disease that cat owners may notice is inappropriate elimination, or urination outside of the litterbox.\u00a0 Although inappropriate urination can be behavioral in origin, it is very important for your veterinarian to exam your cat to rule out any potential underlying medical problems.\u00a0 Possible causes of lower urinary tract disease in cats include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Urinary stones<\/li>\n<li>Urinary tract infection<\/li>\n<li>Idiopathic cystitis (inflammation of the bladder)<\/li>\n<li>Urethral obstruction (blockage of the urethra\u00a0with stones or mineral plugs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What in the world is idiopathic cystitis?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the most commonly diagnosed problems in cats with urinary issues is idiopathic cystitis, which describes inflammation in the bladder that occurs for an unknown reason.\u00a0 This condition is still not completely understood in cats, but is believed to be related to stress.\u00a0 As idiopathic cystitis progresses, it leads to significant inflammation within the bladder, along with the production of debris composed of inflammatory cells, blood clots, and mineral deposits.\u00a0 If this inflammation is persistent and ongoing, enough debris can accumulate within the bladder to result in urethral obstruction.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Blocked-Cat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-664 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Blocked-Cat.jpg\" alt=\"Urinary Blockage\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Blocked-Cat.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Blocked-Cat-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Urethral obstruction is the most serious form of urinary tract disease, and can be life-threatening. \u00a0Cats that are obstructed are unable to urinate, which\u00a0means that they are unable to eliminate the body\u2019s waste products that are filtered through the urine.\u00a0 Obstructions almost always occur in male cats due to the length and narrow diameter of their urethra compared to female cats. In the male, small bladder stones often cause an obstruction as they pass out of the bladder and through the urethra.
