{"id":692,"date":"2016-11-14T13:39:56","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T13:39:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/?p=692"},"modified":"2016-11-14T13:39:56","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T13:39:56","slug":"fear-free-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/fear-free-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Fear Free Initiative?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fear Free Initiative: Taking the Pet out of Petrified<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1>Dr. Monica Tarantino<\/h1>\n<p>Fear Free is taking over at AMH and we cannot wait!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it, we here at AMH love your animals\u2026 but they don\u2019t always love us!\u00a0 The concept that many animals experience anxiety, stress and fear at the vet is driving a new method of pet management at veterinary offices across the US.\u00a0 This method is called Fear Free and is an initiative that changes the way we approach and handle animals starting from home, through waiting room, exam room and checkout. \u00a0\u00a0At AMH, our doctors and staff are proud to be one of the first hospitals in the US to embrace this method.\u00a0 Check out the below link to see a short video with Dr. Marty Becker and Dr. Deborah Horowitz, talk about the path to the Fear Free initiative ( <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MV685GjC0ns\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MV685GjC0ns<\/a> ):<\/p>\n<p>So, what should you expect?\u00a0 Here\u2019s a few things you\u2019ll start seeing:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_694\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Fear-Free-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-694\" class=\"wp-image-694 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Fear-Free-3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Here we are feeding a nervous, submissive pet treats in order to decrease stress before performing services.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here we are feeding a nervous, submissive pet treats in order to decrease stress before performing services.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Separate Dog and Cat Waiting Areas:<\/u><\/strong> we will be doing basic things like trying to keep our dog and cat friends in separate areas in the waiting room to help decrease stress.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Take A Walk or Wait in the Car:<\/u><\/strong> for dogs, allow them to walk outside in designated areas while you wait. For cats, if the waiting room seems stressful, ask the front desk staff if you can wait in your car with your cat until their room is ready.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3) <u>Withholding Food\/Treat Rewards: <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0To help us bond with your pets even more, please withhold food from your pet prior to coming to see us (unless medically contraindicated). Treat rewards allow us to create a more positive experience at the vet!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_695\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Fear-Free-34.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-695\" class=\"wp-image-695\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Fear-Free-34-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fear free socialization- some cats like their exams on a lap rather than a table!\" width=\"202\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fear free socialization- some cats like their exams on a lap rather than a table!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>4)<u> Low Stress Pheromone Sprays:<\/u><\/strong> prior to your exam room appointment, our staff sprays exam rooms and towels with pheromone sprays designed to decrease stress.\u00a0 We have both a cat specific pheromone spray and a dog specific pheromone spray.\u00a0 Our staff is consistently doing this prior to all our appointments with your beloved animal to assist in creating a low stress visit.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>5) Low Stress Holding and Management Techniques:<\/u><\/strong> our staff actively practices low stress animal holding techniques (see picture below of our technician Jess G. expertly holding our feisty kitty friend).\u00a0 Each of your pets are special and unique and we approach them as such using body language cues, previous exam tips and other methods to help figure out what works best for them!
