{"id":75,"date":"2010-11-30T15:24:24","date_gmt":"2010-11-30T15:24:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/?p=75"},"modified":"2010-11-30T15:24:24","modified_gmt":"2010-11-30T15:24:24","slug":"tis-the-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalmedical.net\/blog\/tis-the-season\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Tis the Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The busiest days at the vet\u2019s office tend to be the right after a big holiday.\u00a0 Many of these appointments involve pets who ate something that they probably shouldn\u2019t have.\u00a0 Some things are fed to pets intentionally, and other things were never meant to be ingested.\u00a0 Here are some common holiday dangers so you can avoid making an extra visit to your veterinarian this holiday season:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Extra treats:<\/strong> Overdoing it can irritate the digestive system, resulting in vomiting, diarrhea, or both.\u00a0 Most cases of simple gastroenteritis are self-limiting, albeit messy.\u00a0 Your veterinarian can prescribe medications to shorten the duration and severity of symptoms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fatty foods: <\/strong>These can trigger inflammation in the pancreas causing abdominal pain, digestive upset, anorexia, and lethargy.\u00a0 Some cases may require hospitalization and intensive care.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People foods: <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Grapes\/raisins: <\/em>Just a few can result in kidney failure in some animals.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Onions\/garlic: <\/em>These cause gastrointestinal problems or even damage to the red blood cells.\u00a0 Cats are more susceptible to toxicity.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Chocolate: <\/em>Methylxanthines contained in chocolate can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, heart arrhythmias, and even death.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Macadamia nuts: <\/em>Ingestion can cause depression, vomiting, and tremors.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Xylitol:<\/em> This artificial sweetener causes the release of insulin, resulting in low blood sugar and liver failure.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>String: <\/strong>Ribbons and tinsel are tempting toys, especially for cats.\u00a0 These can become lodged in the digestive tract and block the normal passage of food or cause damage to the intestines.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bones: <\/strong>Bones can get stuck around the jaw or lodged within the mouth or intestines, requiring surgery.\u00a0 Small sharp bones may cause perforations on the way out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plants:<\/strong> Many holiday plants can cause digestive upset, and some are downright toxic.\u00a0 Mistletoe and lilies can be deadly.\u00a0 Poinsettias may cause oral and gastrointestinal irritation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During this holiday season be on the lookout for things that may harm your pet.\u00a0 Accidents do happen, though, so keep your veterinarian\u2019s number close at hand.\u00a0 Being prepared can ensure that everyone\u2019s season is merry and bright!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The busiest days at the vet\u2019s office tend to be the right after a big holiday.
