Dealing with a pet emergency is one of the most difficult parts of being a pet owner. Seeing your pet injured or in pain, the confusion of wondering what comes next, and managing the financial aspects can be downright upsetting.
Some pet emergencies simply aren’t preventable, but knowing where you can go for pet emergency services, any time of the day or night, can be a big relief for pet owners. Here at Animal Medical Hospital, we are committed to providing high quality emergency care for the Charlotte community, every hour of every day!
Is It an Emergency?
Certain pet emergencies are obvious, but sometimes the signs that your pet needs help aren’t immediately apparent. Give us a call or bring your pet in to see us if they are experiencing any of the following:
- Hit by a car, fall, or other trauma
- Severe bleeding, or bleeding that does not stop within 5 minutes
- Bleeding from the mouth, nose, or anus
- Exposure to or potential ingestion of a toxic substance
- A bloated, swollen, or painful abdomen (call or come in immediately)
- Straining or inability to urinate (call or come in immediately)
- Vomiting or diarrhea multiple times in a 24-hour period
- Difficulty breathing, uncontrolled coughing, choking
- Obvious signs of pain (limping, vocalizing, inability to stand)
- Any injury to or problem with the eyes
- Collapse or fainting
- Seizure
- Birthing difficulties

Animal Medical Hospital knows that pet emergencies can happen any time of the day or night, which is why we offer emergency services on a walk-in basis, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Having a plan in place can save precious time and relieve you of the burden of having to figure out where to take your pet at 2AM on a weekend, or any other time, and may mean the difference between life and death for an ill or injured pet.

Transporting Your Pet
Severely injured pets may behave in an unpredictable manner, so it’s important to exercise the utmost caution when approaching and transporting, in order to protect yourself from injury. If your pet is behaving aggressively, seek help immediately.
If you feel safe, approach your pet slowly and calmly, and move them carefully to a makeshift stretcher for transport to our hospital. Place a towel or blanket over their head to prevent biting, and support the head and neck carefully to avoid further injury.
